About Us

Our Approach

Eating disorders create significant challenges for teens and their families in all aspects of their lives. Sometimes these challenges require intensive treatment. Through our multidisciplinary approach, we address physical, emotional, and nutritional health, academic functioning, and family and peer relationships. Our goal is to provide holistic care that supports adolescents and their families in finding new and healthy ways of living.

So often, teens with eating disorders and their families feel isolated and alone. Our program provides structure and support. It gives clients a chance to connect, relate and problem solve with others that struggle with similar issues. We help guide families in supporting their loved ones in a safe and caring way.

Our Team

Our multidisciplinary team consists of professionals with medical, psychiatric, therapy and nutritional backgrounds that treat teens with eating disorders. Our team has experience treating eating disorder patients across a range of environments including: in-patient medical and psychiatric hospitalization, residential treatment centers, partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient programs, as well as outpatient clinics. Every Therapist at The Healthy Teen Project has completed (or is in the process of completing) certification for Family Based Treatment via the Training Institute for Child and Adolescent Eating Disorders.

Our History

The Healthy Teen Project (“HTP”) was founded by three medical and psychiatry providers who found limited treatment options in the San Francisco Bay Area for their adolescent patients who needed a higher level of care. Not every patient’s condition required admission to an inpatient medical/psychiatric facility or residential program. At the time, a common practice was to integrate adolescents with adults in outpatient eating disorder treatment programs. Many of our patients’ families expressed concerns about the challenges their teens would encounter during treatment when mixed with adults whose developmental life stage and treatment concerns would look drastically different, and whose conditions may be more advanced. Adolescent patients expressed a need for a treatment program that was designed for their needs and would take into account the common challenges that adolescents face. Additionally, it seemed critical to create a safe space where adolescents could express, and relate to, shared experiences amongst a group of their peers. Moreover, families expressed a need to be more integral to their child’s treatment and wanted a program that would provide them with the comprehensive education, support, and guidance they needed during this critical period of care.

In response, HTP opened in June 2013 in Los Altos as the first adolescent-only eating disorder treatment program in the San Francisco Bay Area. To further meet the needs of the eating disorder community, outpatient medical, psychiatric, nutritional and therapy services began upstairs from HTP in September of 2014 under the name of The Community Health Collaborative.

Having established its reputation as the preferred eating disorder treatment program for teens in the South Bay, HTP then opened its San Francisco location in December of 2019 to serve the needs San Francisco, the North Bay, East Bay and Upper Peninsula.

Today we are able to serve the majority of the San Francisco Bay Area and pride ourselves on creating a welcoming and recovery-oriented milieu that accepts individuals from all diverse backgrounds.

"The words ‘Thank You’ are woefully inadequate to express our appreciation for what you have given to our family; however, we do, from the bottom of our hearts, thank you."

"To be able to live a normal, happy and controlled life is the best thing I could have ever asked for, and as a team, you help me to achieve that."

"Our experience at the Healthy Teen Project has been profoundly transformative. Everyone on staff went above and beyond in helping our daughter get the help she needed. "
